Introduction - Retinal Surgery

The Retina is a very thin membrane that lines the inside of the eye. It receives light rays and sends the signal through the opticnerve to the brain for processing into an image.

At CEDS Eye Hospital, the Retina Departmentis manned by highly qualified and confident Retina Specialists and Surgeons. The Centre is equipped with very sophisticated equipment both for diagnosis and treatment of the retinal diseases.

Common Retinal diseases managed at our center include:

  1. • Age Related Macular Degeneration
  2. • Retinal Detachments
  3. • Diabetic Retinopathy
  4. • Retinal Vascular Occlusions
  5. • Retinal Membranes
  6. • Trauma
  7. • Retinal Degenerations
  8. • Retinal Tumors like Retinoblastomas and Choroidal Melanomas
  9. • Vitreous Hemorrhage
  10. • Retinal and Uveal Inflammations
  11. • Optic Nerve Disorders

Most retinal diseases require a Fundus Fluorescein Angiography to be done in order to confirm the diagnosis and and plan appropriate treatment. High resolution photography like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) help determine the extent of the damage.

Procedures of Retinal Surgery

Common modalities of treatment offered are:

  1. • Retinal Laser Photocoagulation

  2. • Intravitreal injections of Steroids and different types of Anti- vascular endothelial growth factors (Anti-VEGFs like Lucentis, Accentrix, Eyelea, Avastin and Macugen)

  3. • Advanced Retinal Surgeries like Cryopexy, Scleral buckling, Vitrectomy, Epiretinal & Internal Limiting Membrane Peeling, Macular Hole Surgery, to name a few are carried out here using the state of the art Carl Zeiss Lumera-T Surgical Microscope equipped with a Volk Merlin Retinal Viewing and Imaging System, Optikon Posterior Segment Surgical Suite and top of the range Vitreous and Retinal surgical equipment.

  4. • CEDS is one of the very few centers in the city to offer sutureless, small incision, 25- and 27- Gauge Retinal Surgeries which provide a new level of comfort and healing, formerly never experienced with retinal surgery.

  5. • All procedures are daycare procedures due to these new and advanced technologies and no hospital stay is required.

Equipment at CEDS

CARL ZEISS VISUCAM The Carl Zeiss Visucam is a state-of the-art device allowing us to photograph the interior of the eye through pupils as small as 3.0 mm. Featuring legendary Zeiss optics and non-mydriatic color-fundus photography, the Visucam 500 makes for ultra-high quality imaging and precise diagnoses of the typical eye ailments like Retinopathies, Glaucoma and Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD).The Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) & Fundus Autofluorescence technique is a vital diagnostic tool used to ascertain the threats to and possible risks of Diabetic and ARMD patients.

CARL ZEISS CIRRUS 500 HD-OCT OCT is an acronym for “Optical Coherence Tomography”. This state-of-the-art instrument is used to analyze the anatomic structure of the optic nerve head, or disc, retina and anterior segment of the eye.

Posterior Segment: It helps to evaluate any macular changes in the retina. Helps in diseases like Macular Edema, Macular Hole, Epi- Retinal Membrane

Glaucoma It helps to assess the disc and evaluate any changes in the RNFL or NRR.

Anterior Segment it measures the thickness of the cornea and assess any alteration in the cornea

NEITZ INDIRECT OPHTHALMOSCOPE This instrument allows for viewing the retina at a wider angle which allows examination of the peripheral retina and a clearer view through lens opacities as well. Binocularity is achieved by the use of mirrors in the instrument to reduce the pupillary distance of the observer to about 15 mm.
